Avi blinked. He was frozen in fear. The creature stood up from its kneeling position, revealing its lithe body and long flaccid penis. It turned to the being behind it, barking something in a hissy and guttural language Avi had never heard before.

The creature then turned back to Avi. “Well, hello,” it said. “Oh, you look tired. Please, come inside and get some rest.”

“I… I don’t know,” said Avi as the second purple-skinned creature began to stand up from the sofa. “I’m sorry to disturb you. I’ll be going.”

“Nonsense,” said the first one, taking a step towards Avi. “You really should pace yourself. It’s a large Labyrinth, after all.”

Avi began to back away, his heart racing as now two uncanny entities were approaching him. “N-no, that’s really fine. I’m just going to leave.”

“I’m afraid I must insist.”

In a split second decision, Avi bolted. Taking off in a sprint, he made it about one stride’s worth before tripping over one of the creature’s well placed feet. He collapsed onto the hard stone floor, and pain shot through his ankle. He grimaced in pain.

“Such a shame. Why do they always try this?”

The other one spoke for the first time, with a lower but more ethereal voice. “I don’t mind. It makes it more fun. Do you want to kiss him, or should I?”

“Don’t do it yet. I want to play with him first. It makes it more fun when they still have hope.”

His ankle throbbing with pain, Avi tried desperately to crawl away from the two creatures, dragging his belly and limp leg on the floor. Avi’s progress was suddenly stopped by a foot planted on his back, causing him to cry out.

“Did you break his leg or something?” asked one of them.

“It’s possible. These boys are so frail, it’s kind of sad.”

The two of them suddenly flipped Avi over, causing more pain to shoot through his ankle. He took a shaky breath in as the creatures examined him, running their cold hands over his body.

“Spread his legs for me.”

“We have to kiss him first. We’re not allowed to use him until he’s back at the colony-”

“To hell with the rules. I haven’t had any stress relief in days.”

The two turned their attention to each other for a moment. They began to argue in the guttural language again.

Thinking fast, Avi decided that, whether these things were real creatures or just humans in very convincing makeup, he did not want to find out what they had planned for him. With his remaining good leg, he quickly kicked upwards and caught the long-haired being in the crotch.

His shriek emanated through the corridor, sounding more like the scratching of a chalkboard than an actual yelp. Seizing the brief moment of confusion, Avi clambered up to his feet, and ran down the corridor in spite of the screaming pain on his ankle.

Though he had a head start, he could hear the footsteps of the creatures behind him. They yelled and hissed, demanding that he stop, but Avi no longer had any doubt that his safety depended on getting as far away from these things as possible.

Avi took the first corner he saw. Then the next one. Then the one after that. His injury was burning, but his survival instincts were outweighing it. Avi had always been something of a fast runner, at least when sprinting.

He felt himself tire by the time he ran around the fifth corner. No, he couldn’t give up now. He couldn’t submit. But his body betrayed him. He felt himself slow down, crumpling as if his own legs were betraying him. For the second time, Avi fell to the ground. He shut his eyes, awaiting his fate.

But nothing happened. After a few seconds, Avi opened his eyes to see that the creatures were no longer chasing him. Somehow, he had lost them.

Motivated by this sudden but fleeting advantage, he hauled himself to his feet. Through his fatigue, his agonizing pain, and his ever-growing dehydration, he rounded four more corners before he was satisfied. With no more mental energy to worry about ankles, mazes, or purple creatures, the second Avi sat down against the wall, he drifted off to sleep.

It was a dreamless sleep, the kind of sleep one only felt when they were totally exhausted, physically and mentally. It went by so fast that Avi was unsure that he had even slept when he opened his eyes again.

He was still in the corridor. Still in the maze. Any illusion left in Avi that he was dreaming had vanished.

The pain in his ankle had been reduced to a dull soreness, but it immediately flared up to a sharp burning when he attempted to put pressure on it. Avi wanted to stay, to perhaps enjoy another dreamless sleep, but he knew he couldn’t. Those creatures could still be after him. In hindsight, he knew he was lucky to get away with passing out.

Avi rose to his feet. The pain was strong, his ankle had definitely been sprained. Maybe broken. But it wasn’t as bad as it had been. So long as paced himself, he could manage.

He began walking with no particular direction in mind. He just wanted to move. Someone was coming for him eventually. He just had to stay out of trouble until then.

As he half walked, half limped through the winding yet eerily straight corridors, Avi began to think about what was going on outside the maze. Certainly, people were looking for him. If not Ryan, someone else. His classmates or TAs. His coworkers. His cell phone bill was today, so perhaps the telecoms company had been the first to figure out he had gone missing.

Avi wondered what his rescue would look like. It would be a huge news story, no doubt. The court case against Ryan would be the trial of the century. This was an extremely elaborate abduction, something out of one of those mystery novels Ryan couldn’t seem to get enough of.

Lost in thought, Avi suddenly stopped again. He was wandering. He needed to stop doing that.

But that wasn’t what had caught his attention. He could hear a noise in the deafening silence of the maze. A faint sobbing sound.

Avi knew that he shouldn’t investigate. In fact, he was actively willing himself to turn around as he began to move to investigate. He was just too worried. The cry was too real. There’s no way it could be coming from one of the two creatures. This had to be a victim, just like Avi.

He found himself facing another doorway, leading into a ceilinged room. How many rooms were there like this in the maze? Had Avi been missing them?

The room was small. It contained a table with a green canvas satchel resting on top, and a bed with a figure inside, facing away from the doorway. This was the origin of the crying. A man, around Avi’s age, was lying under the covers in tears. This wasn’t a purple-skinned creature. This was a human.

“Hey,” said Avi, leaning his head into the small room. The man turned around in fright, keeping the covers over most of his body.

“Oh,” he said after a moment. “Fuck. Don’t scare me like that. I thought you were a monster.”

“No. Just a regular person.”

“Okay.”

An awkward pause filled the room. “Can I come in?” said Avi finally.

“Fine, I guess,” replied the boy. Avi could see the exposed parts of him more clearly now—pale, with dirty blond hair. His face was stained with tears.

Avi approached the bed calmly. “Hey. I know it’s scary. I’m guessing you’re lost too?”

He nods. “Yeah. I was with my friend and my boyfriend, we got separated… How long have you been down here?”

Avi frowned. “We’ve only been here for a couple of hours.”

“You have, maybe. I’ve been here… two months? I think?” He wiped his eyes.

Avi’s jaw dropped. Two months. Were there other people down here already? “How? What, how did you get here?”

“Abducted by Haltus. Same as everyone else.”

Avi couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “What the hell have you been eating?”

“There’s food down here. You’ll learn how to find it. There’s some in my bag if you like.

Unsure how else to react, Avi simply nodded and took a few steps towards the table. Inside the bag, among some other assorted things, were a few loaves of bread. He took one out and sat down on the bed, tearing off a piece of it and handing it to the boy.

“That’s okay. You need it more,” he said. “I’m sorry you ended up here. It’s pretty awful.”

“I figured,” said Avi, putting a chunk of bread into his mouth. It was slightly stale, but seeing as he hadn’t eaten in hours, he chewed it readily. “So… you were here with friends?”

“Friends I met in the Labyrinth, mind you. We got split up when a gate suddenly closed in the hallway. We’d never seen anything like it, but it was me on one end and them on the other. They told me they’d come back for me… that was about a week ago.” Avi watched a bead of sweat roll down the boy’s face as he spoke.

“What’s your name?” asked Avi, his mouth full.

“Sebastian,” he said. “Yours?”

“Avi. Nice to meet you. It would be good to have a friend down here.”

Sebastian sighed. “Well, don’t expect me to be of much help. I’m staying right here. But I hope you figure out how to escape this place.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. We’re going to find your friends and get you out of here.”

Sebastian fell silent for a moment. His voice dropped to a whisper. “Avi… I got kissed.”

“You got what?”

Sebastian threw the covers off of himself, revealing his naked and slightly chubby body. Standing out from his pale skin was a purple patch around his belly button, about the size of a softball.

“What the hell?” asked Avi, standing up suddenly.

“God, you really are new. I got kissed. By an incubus. If you get kissed by an incubus, you turn into one.”

Avi’s hands covered his mouth. “You don’t mean those purple things?”

“So you’ve seen them. There are hundreds of them, maybe thousands. Where do you think they all come from?”

Avi knew he should be feeling more sympathy for the boy, but he found himself in shock at how close he had come to the same fate. They were talking about kissing him.

“Are you… what’s going to happen to you?”

“Well, I’m basically going to die,” said Sebastain. He sounded brave, but Avi could tell he was putting on a front. “The process takes something like two days. And so far, it’s not very pleasant.” He clutches his stomach.

“I can help you,” said Avi. “We can find a doctor. A cure. Something.”

“You can’t help me. I’m sorry. I’m doomed… I’m going to be one of those sex-crazed things…” Sebastian was suddenly betrayed by his attempted brave face. A tear rolled down his face.

Avi immediately went to his side, placing the bread on the other side of the bed. He wrapped his arm around Sebastian’s shoulder. “Hey, hey, I’m here. You’re not alone.”

He returned to his crying. Difficult to blame him considering the situation. He was going to die away from anyone who knew or loved him.

“I can stay here. Maybe I can make it easier for you. You can talk to me about happy things, things outside of the maze. You can tell me about your life before you were here, or maybe about your new boyfriend-”

“Jaden,” said Sebastian, his crying slowing down again.

“What?”

“My boyfriend’s name is Jaden. He’s so sweet. Red hair, freckles. Really tall.”

“Mmhm,” replied Avi, stroking the boy’s back. “And what else?”

“Well, we were in the same Century- that’s what we call the groups of a hundred that come down here- and we ended up together. We met the other guy later on, Lance is his name.”

“Do you think they’re still by each other’s side?”

“Definitely. Jaden is smart. So is Lance. They’re probably doing fine. I just got unlucky.”

Avi smiled for the first time in awhile. “Let me get you back under the covers.”

Sebastian nodded, wordlessly slipping back into his position and pulling the covers up. Avi swapped his tear-stained pillow for a dry one. He could hear Sebastian taking deep breaths.

“Okay,” said Sebastian, “I’m okay. I’m alright.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Avi,” said the boy, turning to his new bedside nurse, “I want to help you. It’s too late for me, but you can still escape this place.”

“I’m listening. Take all the time you need.”

“The first thing you need to understand: this is real. Seriously. If you have any instinct left in your mind that this is an elaborate hoax or something, push it out. Okay?”

Avi took a deep breath in. It was time to stop lying to himself. “Alright. I understand.”

“So, yeah, this place is a Labyrinth. It is very big, and very old. All of us were brought here by agents of The Order, which I assume you were told about. For the last thirty years or so, Haltus has been running the abductions and stuff.”

“I’m sorry, thirty YEARS?”

“He’s immortal, remember? Fifty is my best guess based on what I’ve learned from other people.” Sebastian pointed to the satchel on the table. “Go get the book out of my bag.”

Avi quickly got to his feet. He grabbed the satchel, and dug through the various items inside, pulling out a thick, leatherbound book with yellowed papers. “What is it?”

“A journal. My journal. Well, it wasn’t always mine. It’s traded hands from Labyrinth victim to Labyrinth victim. Read the first entry.”

Intrigued, Avi, skittishly flipped open the book to the first page, but slowed down his pace when he remembered the delicate state of the book.

*28th July, 1916*

*It is my fourth day here. I’m still not any closer to figuring out where I am. But I think I’m getting close.*

“Holy fuck,” said Avi. “1916?”

“Yep. And this place is even older than that.”

Avi closed the book, putting it back in the bag. “Sebastian… it’s so much to ask,
I know. But please… tell me everything.”

Sebastian smirked. “Where do you want to start?”
