Nancy had seen him before. Many times before, in fact she saw him nearly every night. Jeff was a maintenance man at the assisted living center where Nancy worked nights as a nurse. He was generally there to be available in the building for any issues that came up at night. Usually just unclogging toilets or changing lightbulbs. The people living in the center were filthy rich and demanded that someone be there at night so that their needs never went unmet. He wasn’t conventionally handsome. He was just under six feet tall. His arms and chest were muscular. His brown curly hair was a little longer than most men wore but it was combed back neatly. His face was round and he wore a day old beard. He was quiet but always pleasant with Nancy. Usually just a smile or a wave as they passed each other in the hallway. Nancy hadn’t paid much attention to him before, however, since she caught her boyfriend in bed with a barmaid, she found herself looking a little more at Jeff.
• Nancy was as attractive as a veteran nurse could be. She didn’t find it practical to wear a lot of makeup or do her hair at work. She was trim yet muscular from years of hard work. She wore her long honey colored hair in a ponytail. Her scrubs were plain navy blue but showed her figure nicely. She wore hot pink reading glasses when she was charting. Like Jeff, she was in her early thirties. She had just moved to a new apartment after dumping her boyfriend and was struggling to rebuild her life again. She wanted love and adventure again, but was finding it hard to accomplish with her work schedule.
• It was a typical night at the center for Nancy. She had just finished passing midnight medications to the few residents that were on her list for that hour. She was making rounds to ensure that no one was wandering or had fallen. She was relieved that everyone was sound asleep in their beds. “Maybe I’ll have an easy night”, she wondered to herself. She settled in at the nurse’s station and slid on her glasses to begin her charting and other clerical work which would take a couple of hours. She glanced at the black glass globes on the ceiling that were the new security cameras installed by the center. Employees were told that it was to ensure resident safety, but everyone knew it was so the center could keep tabs on the staff. She sighed and sipped on her coffee as she got back to work, paying attention to the aides as they began their own rounds with the residents.
• As Nancy was finishing up printing out paperwork for a doctor appointment in the morning she headed to the front office to collect the forms from the printer. It was still early in the shift so she decided to go outside for some fresh air. After getting the forms into the appointment folder she headed outside. It was early in the summer but the night air was still cool. She sat on a bench outside and started looking at her phone checking social media. Her ex had posted photos of him at the bar with his barmaid girlfriend. She wiped away tears as she pressed the button to delete him from her account. She closed her green eyes and tried to control her emotions. She didn’t need this kind of distraction anymore tonight.
• “Rough night?”. The male voice jerked Nancy to attention. Jeff was standing at the door next to her, tool box in hand. “Oh, yeah. I’m just catching a little break.”. He smiled as if he knew how he had startled her. “Yeah, me too. They’ve got me checking on all of these new cameras. Some of them don’t work. The security company is coming in the morning to fix them. It’s not a big deal, just the ones in the lobby and the service hall aren’t picking up footage. Ten grand, you’d think they would work!”. He chuckled as he stretched his arms over his head. Nancy noticed his t-shirt rose a little and exposed part of his abdomen. It was flat but not muscular, with just a little hair in the middle. She hoped the darkness would cover the warmth on her face that she suddenly felt. “Yeah, it seems like a big waste just to make sure we are doing our jobs, it’s like they don’t trust us or something.” Nancy replied sarcastically. “I should be getting back, I’m sure the ones on the hall work, right?”. “Yep, those are running great, not that I’ve been watching you guys.” Jeff stammered. Nancy laughed a little and headed back to her station. Just before she sat down she heard the familiar rattle of the wheels of a walker. She rushed towards the sound and saw a resident walking into the wrong room. “Mrs Henderson, this isn’t your room, here let me show you where to go.” “No! I need to check on my daughter! She is sick, I need to find her!” Mrs Henderson replied as was confused again. Nancy spent a few minutes redirecting her safely. As Nancy returned to her station she hoped that would be the only interruption in the night. She alerted the aides to Mrs Henderson’s wandering and began to prepare for the morning.
• Jeff passed through the hall a few more times, collecting trash and fixing a wobbly table in the dining room. He and Nancy would exchange greetings each time they saw each other. It was seeming like the rest of the shift would be uneventful. One of the residents was up now and watching an old movie on TV. The aides were sitting in the hallway, Nancy noticed one was reading flashcards for a college test.
It was just as everything should be.
As Nancy finished filling water pitchers for the morning medications, she heard a loud shrill noise. “It’s the fire alarm! Crystal! Jenna! Get Mr Diaz back in his room! Close all the doors! Jeff!! Where are you!!”. Nancy grabbed the fire extinguisher as the aides scrambled to account for the residents. She went to the control board to see where the alarm originated. She saw Jeff running up the unit as she made her way down the hall. There was Mrs Henderson, stumbling down the hall without her walker, calling her daughter’s name. “Linda! Where are you Linda!?”. She was holding on to the fire alarm to steady herself. “Jeff! I think she pulled the alarm! Crystal, didn’t you see her come out?! Get her back in her room!!”. Nancy barked orders as she called the administrator. “Jeff, call the fire department so they know what happened. Let them know that we think a resident pulled it!” They could already hear the fire sirens as Nancy was speaking with the groggy administrator. “Now I have to write a statement and do walking fire rounds! This is just great!”. Nancy began to break down in front of Jeff. “I don’t need this tonight!”
Jeff grabbed her, holding her in a strong embrace. Realizing what he was doing, he gently let her go. “Uh, it’s ok. It was an accident. You saw her holding the alarm. Just tell the fire department. It’s ok.” Nancy smiled at him and began to compose herself. “Crystal! Here, you start the first round,. I have to meet the squad and explain what happened”. She thrust the checklist to the flustered aide and took off to the lobby. There was already a fire truck and four firefighters waiting to be let in. They quickly reset the alarm system and left after sweeping the building to ensure that there was no fire. Jeff turned to Nancy. “Hey, I’m sorry about that, you know, it was a reflex…or something”. His face was red now, his brown eyes wide. He scratched his beard as he spoke. Nancy took a deep breath and touched his broad shoulders. “It’s ok. I think I needed that…” “Hey, I’m all done, no fires here!”. Crystal interrupted them as she bounced down the hall. “Ok, well we’re going to do the next round so you go back to your hall and keep an eye on them this time!” Nancy snapped, grabbing the checklist. “We?” Jeff asked.
Nancy led Jeff down the service hall, she pointed to a door that was kept locked. “Open it!” she ordered. “The control room? They don’tusually..” Nancy cut him off with her tongue in his mouth and her hand on his crotch. Jeff yanked the keys off his belt and fumbled for the right key. The room was dark with only one lightbulb to illuminate the electrical panels and television screens for the cameras. Sure enough, two screens were black. They were not going to be seen.
Nancy pulled Jeff closer to her body, he pulled at the drawstring of her pants as she unbuckled his belt. She pulled his t-shirt over his head as she kicked off her shoes and wriggled out of her pants. He too, threw his jeans aside. She grabbed his now erect member in her hands, stroking it as they explored each other’s mouths with their tongues. Jeff grabbed her large, naked breasts, squeezing her hard nipples and exploring their curves. Nancy could smell the leather scent of his cologne as he picked her up and sat her on top of the desk. He pulled away from her, gazing deep into her eyes. She could still taste his minty breath. “What are we thinking?!”. He asked, nearly breathless. “No thinking” Nancy whispered as she wrapped her legs around his waist and leaned back against the wall. He was inside her, his arms around her shoulders. She felt the smooth wood of the desk rubbing her bottom rhythmically with every thrust of his hips. She moaned quietly with ecstacy as the warmth and tension built up within her as she came. She lightly dug her nails into his back feeling his muscles tighten as he began to thrust faster. Jeff groaned softly into her ear as she felt him come into her. They held each other for a moment collecting their selves. Jeff continued to kiss her as he helped her off of the desk. They quickly dressed, Nancy straightened her ponytail and picked up the clipboard holding the checklist. “Jeff…” He held up his hand and looked at the door. He glanced at the security TV screens. “We have some people up in the hall,” They quickly made their way to the lobby where the residents were already gathering for morning medications and breakfast. Jeff took the clipboard and began rounds again. Nancy quickly started passing out medications and greeting the early risers. Crystal and Jenna were busy finishing up with their chores for the night. Nancy heard the center’s cell phone vibrate on the medication cart. She picked it up a realized she had missed five calls. She called the now irate administrator and gave report on the status of the center. As she gave the last pill of the night she made her way back to the nurse’s station to find Jeff waiting for her. He was drumming his finger on the clipboard and smiling at her as she parked her cart. “Gene said we can call an all clear for the night” Nancy said as she took the clipboard from Jeff. “All right, I’ll wait for you outside.” Jeff walked off of the unit and Nancy watched the door close behind him. As she gave report to the day shift she couldn’t help but wonder what he would be waiting for. She quickly wrote her statement about the fire alarm and placed a copy in the administrator’s mailbox. She grabbed her purse from her locker and clocked out. As she made her way to her car, she could see Jeff sitting in his truck in the parking lot. He rolled his window down as she approached him. Nancy smiled at him and leaned against his door. He reached over the passenger seat, picked something up and handed it to her. “I found these in the control room.” Nancy laughed as she saw that it was her hot pink glasses. Jeff started the engine. “You know, they’re going to get those cameras fixed today.” “Yeah.” She replied. “Were going to have to be more careful”. Jeff’s eyes widened, “Really? You aren’t worried about getting caught?” Nancy leaned closer to his window. “Absolutely! I meant that you should call me later on, ok?” Jeff nodded in agreement. She handed him her number and got into her car. As she watched him drive away she felt a little bit of herself return. She felt beautiful and sexy again and she owed it all to a crazy night at work, and a couple of broken cameras.
