Elena kissed Antonio. Placing her hand upon his cheek.
“I’m sorry my dear. You can not go where we are going. It’s for the best.” He said in a low tone.
His gaze shifted to view the associates as they forced Charlie Duran up and dragged him towards a large steel door.
With the press of a button, the large solidly constructed gate rumbled to life and retracted to reveal a lengthy corridor.
As Antonio turned to head for the tunnel, he stopped to face Elena and gave her final instructions. His ability to turn from passionate lover to stone cold businessman was uncanny.
“Get dressed. My men will take you home. Your suffering is over.”
Elena. The Maid. The Intern. Countless others. Their suffering at the hands of Charlie Duran would finally be over once and for all.
For all these years he had used power and prestigious exploits to dominate others at their expense and wellbeing; now the sins of the father had come home to roost.
With a final kiss, Antonio Geist departed from Elena and into the depths of the corridor.
***********
The Scales of Justitia was an impressive watercraft. The speedboat had been a celebratory gift that Charlie Duran had purchased to commemorate his appointment to the position of Deputy Attorney General years ago. Much like its owner it was flamboyant and commanding. It was hard to miss almost domineering in its pursuit of attention when viewed on the open water.
The Speed Boat roared to life jetting across the surface of the sea as it is departed from its docked state. The waves broke and retreated away from the sleek shape as it headed away, farther, and farther from the established shoreline. The lights of the coastal city becoming fainter and fainter until finally there was nothing only darkness and the vast expanses of the open ocean.
The night was all encompassing. In the cloak of darkness, it was almost impossible to tell where the expanse of the sky ended, and the vastness of the ocean began. There was hardly a cloud in the sky. The evening was still not even a breeze disturbed the overwhelming silence.
Charlie Duran lay crumpled on the deck of the boat. His chest, back and ribs bruised and ruptured from repeated and forceful assaults with blunt objects; justice taken out upon him by numerous women that he had once victimized.
He groaned in pain.
“I’m still the Attorney. General.” He groaned as blood trickled from his lip.
Sora and Marco stood at the bow of the boat peering out into the endless expanses of the ocean.
Marco extended his arm out pointing at something unseen.
“This should do.” He exclaimed calmly.
I stood up and walked over to Charlie.
“This is it.” I sighed as I pulled on a pair of black leather gloves.
He weakly groaned and looked up at me defeated, destroyed, and yet still refusing to submit. Still refusing to come to terms with what was happening nor to take responsibility for everything that he had done.
“It’s time for Charlie Duran to finally go fishing.”
Marco walked over and pulled on a pair of black gloves as well.
“You should feel honored Chuck.” He chimed in.
“Usually, there are people on the payroll that handle this kind of stuff. Even though you are a pathetic bastard and a piece of shit; the boss here sees fit that he handles this one himself.”
It was then that Charlie began to realize what was going on and he gathered his strength in an attempt to flail and fight for his life.
“No! Wait!” he protested.
“Stop!”
We hoisted him up and carried him to the edge of the boat.
“I should have shot you when I had the chance. Remember that night when you first forced yourself upon that young intern in your hotel room? I had you right in my crosshairs. I could have painted the stationary notepad next to the lamp with your brain matter but if I would have gone that route, I would have missed out on this.” Marco said.
“Goodnight Charlie.” Sora said in a low tone and kissed his forehead. A symbolic gesture.
She produced a knife from a hidden sheath along her inner thigh and produced four slashes along Duran’s body. Vertical incisions along the lengths of his arms and the backs of his legs before thrusting it into his abdomen with a guttural pierce.
“Mors Vincit Omnia. Death always wins. Death Conquers All.”
With a heave we tossed him into the sea. The waters accepting our offering with a welcoming splash. Charlie Duran, once the poster child for crime and justice was now nothing more than a guest of Poseidon as he flailed about. The cruelty of saltwater entering his open wounds as blood oozed into the water essentially chumming its expanse.
As the boat rumbled to life and began to motor away, they began to show up.
The pronounced dorsal fins of sharks enthralled by the delightful scent of fresh blood began to circle in a morbid dance anticipating weakened prey to become their next meal.
Charlie struggled to keep afloat, his head bobbing up and down as he gasped for breath, struggling for air as he spit out mouthfuls of bloody sea water. He was terrified with fear and frozen with shock as he struggled to come to terms with what was happening. His eyes darted left and right but it was futile. Shark fins circling, approaching, closer and closer.
“Get away. Get back.” He protested trying to find the strength to splash and attempt to ward off the sharks.
He was met with intense pain at the sheer power of the first bite.
He shrieked in agony.
Then came the second bite and finally, as he cried out; he was suddenly pulled beneath the surface to be greeted by his final demise.
The cries of terror and pain were drowned out by the boat’s motor as it droned out of sight.
The sound of an approaching helicopter broke the silence of the night.
“It’s time to go.” Marco announced as he wrapped his arm around Sora and turned to face me.
The rotor wash of the rotorcraft caused ripples in the surface of the water as it came to a steady hover just above the surface of the boat.
A door slid open on the side to a passenger cabin and a flight crewman extended his arm out to assist with entering the flying machine.
I sat in the open doorway, placing a headset upon my head. The earpieces crackled to life as the pilot spoke into the intercom system.
“Welcome aboard Mr. Geist.”
I nodded in acknowledgement.
With a steady lurch forward, the aircraft transitioned to forward flight and banked away from the lifeless boat which bobbed with the waves untended.
********
As daybreak came, the news outlets were abuzz with stories about Charlie Duran’s fall from grace. The Attorney General turned murderer, extortionist, womanizer, and rapist had disappeared without a trace.
The Coast Guard discovered his abandoned speedboat torched and ablaze with columns of billowing flame and smoke reaching towards the sky.
The newly widowed Elena returned to her home country seeking the solace of her rural home. For all that Charles Duran had put her and her family through, it was finally over. The torment was over and now she could work to rebuild her life and start anew.
She stood on the balcony of her modest family home taking in the sights of numerous flowers in her mother’s garden. The scent of fresh watered jasmine encapsulated her senses as she exhaled lightly. While she was happy Charlie was out of her life; she still missed Geist.
“Elena are you alright?” her mother asked standing in the doorway peering out at her daughter.
“Yes. I am okay. Thanks to the Ghost.” She answered with a gentle smile as she gazed onto the flower blossoms.
The phone rang and her father promptly answered.
“Hello?”
“May I speak with Elena.” The voice on the other end of the line said.
“Yes. Please hold.”
Her father walked to the doorway and wrapped his arm around his wife.
“Elena, there is call for you on the telephone.” He announced.
She turned to face him puzzled as she stood there momentarily before heading into the house and raising the receiver to her ear.
“Hello.” She answered.
“Elena. The Ghost sends for you.” The voice replied before the line abruptly went dead.
She returned the receiver to the base and exhaled, trying to make sense of everything that was going on. She turned in silence and headed past her parents to the balcony.
“Is everything okay?” her father questioned.
She nodded quietly looking at the ground. A slight smile of happiness crept across her face. She looked up out over the meager yard of the home and up the door road that snaked through the town.
A man in a dark suit made his way slowly down the street and stopped just within the realm of sight for Elena.
He lifted his head and his hand raised up to tilt his sunglasses and expose his dark eyes as he nodded.
“Marco.” She whispered to herself.
Geist was near.
