Everyone has that one day at their job. That one day where nothing is off the table when it comes to making you mad. It’s nobody’s fault, really. Everyone just contributes without knowing that you’ve got 20 more problems to deal with on top of the tedious task they’ve given you. It is what it is.
Today was my one day.
Usually, I don’t mind staying for overtime at my job. But tonight I was supposed to take my wife and kids bowling and Olive Garden to reward them for getting good report cards. But work had to be done, and I was the one to do it.
Sometimes I wish I hadn’t become an accountant. I was always the math type in school, so I figured a career where I put my skills to work would suit me. And for the most part, it did. But then there’s today.
Since three of my co-workers called in sick, (probably to go see the new Fast and Furious movie on opening night), my boss made me stay overtime to pick up the slack. They all worked in different areas than what I was trained for, so I had very little idea what I was doing. This wouldn’t have been a problem, if my boss would stay here to help me figure it out. He stays late every night to maintain the servers, run through employee files, make important phone calls, all that jazz. Except tonight. Conveniently, he had an urgent doctor’s appointment. Wouldn’t surprise me if he went to see the new Fast and Furious too.
So there I sat at my desk in my cubicle, trying to learn to walk again. Everyone else had gone home, except for me and a few interns that the boss had tidy up the office. Those kids wouldn’t know how any of this works. So I was on my own.
My phone vibrated. Excited to have one brief moment away from my work, I looked to see what the notification was. It was a text from my wife. It read,
“kids couldnt wait. had to take them out for dinner. sorry”
I replied,
“that’s okay. they deserve it. tell them im proud of them. gtg, love u”
My messaging app said she was typing something, but before it was finished, I heard the door of my boss’ office open. I put away my phone, not wanting to be caught. He left the office while putting on his coat, and stopped when he saw two of the young interns chatting.
“Do I pay you to stand around and do nothing? Get those filing cabinets organized and the floors swept, or the next thing you’ll be chatting about is what to put on your resume!” He scolded. That scared the interns into resuming their tasks at once.
His secretary appeared in the doorway to his office.
“Drive safely, sir!” She said in a chipper voice as he entered the elevator.
As soon as the doors closed, she turned to the two interns.
“Beat it, you two. You’ve done enough I have my private work to do.” She said in a threatening tone. They quickly took their belongings and left, taking the stairs.
I was confused by the whole ordeal, but shrugged it off and went back to work, pretending I didn’t hear any of it. After a few minutes, I heard someone outside my cubicle.
“Still busy there?” The secretary said.
I turned around in my chair. She was standing there with her hands at her hips.
“Yeah, what’s up?” I said.
She walked into my cubicle. “I think that’s so unfair, that you have to stay here all alone while everyone else gets to enjoy their night.” She said.
“Well you just sent those two interns home early for some reason, so I don’t know why you’re saying it’s unfair.” I said.
She giggled. “How long have you been fighting with this?” She asked, gesturing at my computer.
“It’s been like 3 hours since I started, but I’ve only been on this project for like 20-”
She reached over and hit the power button on the PC. It shut down without saving my work.
“What the hell? What is wrong with you? I didn’t have it on autosave!” I shouted.
“You’ve been stressed out, I can tell.” She said. “Don’t you worry, I’m gonna make it all better.”
“What are you talking about? You just deleted my progress!”
She took off her glasses and seductively sucked on the end of them. “I think you should take your mind off work for a while.” She said.
“No way. No. Get out of my workspace.” I said.
“You like my outfit?” She said, rubbing her hands up and down her pencil skirt and white blouse.
“Not interested.” I said.
“You will be.” She whispered, unbuttoning her blouse and crawling on top of me in my chair. I shoved her off before she tried to kiss me.
“What the fuck!?” I shouted. “This is harassment! Get the fuck out of here!”
She grabbed me by the tie and shoved me against the wall and kissed me. I tried pushing her off but she was stronger than I was.
“STOP!” I screamed.
“There’s nobody here to hear you. You’re all mine. If you want to keep your job, I suggest going with the flow” she said, undoing my belt buckle.
“I’m gonna report you for workplace sexual harassment if you don’t stop. I’m married, so get off me.” I said through gritted teeth.
She laughed. I asked her what was so funny.
“You don’t get it, do you?” She asked.
“Get what?”
“You honestly think it’s up to you? You’re in a story posted on Reddit to arouse 16 year olds on a softcore porn writing sub. You’re the one the reader is supposed to imagine being, and I’m the sexy dominant woman they’re supposed to fantasize about because they have no sex life. Now let’s fuck!”
“I… Don’t have time for this.” I said. I pushed her off, grabbed my things and left. As I was going down the elevator, I made a call to human resources.
The next day, my boss was moving boxes of supplies out of the secretary’s desk. It turns out she got fired for multiple accusations of workplace sexual harassment.
I then got a text from my wife. It read:
“the kids and I got diabetes from eating so many breadsticks at olive garden theyre so fucking good anyway you have to buy our insulin now”
Fuck.
