*Note: Yakshas are mystical demonic beings in Indian mythology who are known to possess people and even appear in deceptive forms.*
Aarthi Srinivasan was a young woman in her late 20s who lived in a small village in Tamil Nadu, India. Despite several years of marriage with her husband, Rajesh, Aarthi was unable to bear a child and this was a matter of great tension in her family. So one fine day, when Aarthi did her pregnancy test and found it to be positive, her happiness knew no bounds! Glad with the occasion, Aarthi and Rajesh decided to visit Lord Murugan’s temple in their village to take divine blessings.
After they reached the temple, the priests were already busy doing an exorcism ritual as one of the villagers seem to have been possessed by a yaksha. Upon inquiry, they found that the yaksha in question was very dangerous and had marked their village for causing devastation, he had claimed three lives in the village already. But thankfully, the head priest was competent enough to have conquered the demonic entity and locked him at the pond besides the temple entrance.
Aarthi and Rajesh entered the temple holding each other’s hands rather tightly, and started doing the puja (prayer ritual). As the mantras were being recited, Aarthi felt a sudden shiver in her body, as if something bad was going to happen. About 15 minutes may have passed since the ritual started and Aarthi suddenly felt a sharp pain deep inside her womb.
*Aaaaarhhhhhh*, she cried and fell down instantly. People gathered around her as there was a brief commotion but the pain had now vanished. “Its nothing, I just slipped and fell” she replied and they continued the ritual.
After taking the blessings, Aarthi and Rajesh went home and started making plans for the unborn child. What should they name him (or her)? What do they need to buy? What about toys? Rajesh decided to take a month long leave, his employer ran a trading business at the village market. He also told Aarthi to take rest, she shouldn’t be venturing anywhere or take risky endeavors until the child is born.
However, that night Aaarthi couldn’t sleep peacefully for some reason. She recalled the sharp pain she had felt during the ritual at Lord Murugan’s temple. What if it was the yaksha? “Silly girl” she tapped herself on the head and admonished herself. Surely, how can the yaksha enter her womb while she was inside the divine temple? It was just impossible, isn’t it?
A few days passed without incident. Rajesh started growing impatient, he just couldn’t wait to see his oncoming son or daughter. “What are you thinking?” asked Aarthi watching him deeply immersed in thoughts. “I’m just thinking how our child is going to look like”. And as he started caressing her and rubbing his hand across her belly to feel the child’s kick or something, it happened. Rajesh felt a sharp pain on his palm when he had placed it right on top of her belly.
He jolted. “What happened” she asked. “Nothing” he replied as he didn’t wanted to scare her. But Aarthi sensed that something was wrong. Why would his mood turn so sour all of a sudden? In the next few days and months, Aarthi started praying to the Lord and reciting all kinds of mantras for bringing happiness and banishing the evil.
But evil has a habit of not dying but coming back again and again and again, isn’t it? And that’s exactly what happened in Aaarthi Srinivasan’s life. Nine months passed since that incident at the temple, a son was born to Aarthi and they named him Karthik (after Lord Murugan as Karthikeya is one of his names). But the real question was, was he really Aarthi’s child or was he possessed by the demonic entity called Yaksha?
The next ten years passed without a major incident. By now, Karthik had grown into a handsome young boy, he was also a bit too tall for his age. He used to accompany his dad to the village market to learn the skills of trading. Though Aarthi had insisted he go to school like many other children in the village, and learn languages and arts, Rajesh had flatly refused. He felt practical skills like trading were more important in life, and they can always send him to gurukul (traditional school run by priests) in future if needed.
Aarthi loved her husband Rajesh and her son Karthik very much, they were all a happy family but after Karthik’s tenth birthday, Aarthi started facing a very strange problem. It seemed that Karthik was developing a kind of split personality. He was this little boy who laughed and worked with his father, and helped his mother during the day but during night, he started doing strange and weird things sometimes. For example, he would sleepwalk occasionally or start talking in a deeper voice and almost perfect accent like grown-ups do.
And the strange thing was that all of this suddenly started happening on Karthik’s tenth birthday. As days passed, things started getting even weirder. During day, all was normal but as night came, she felt he was less like her son Karthik and more like someone else.
“I’m getting late for the market, where is my breakfast?” shouted Rajesh one morning. “Bringing it” Aarthi replied in an irritated tone. But she dashed with the toy tricycle while she was carrying water to the dining table, and it spilled all over the floor. “KARTHIK” she cried angrily, “how many times have I told you not to leave it here”. “sorry mother” he replied and took the tricycle away.
Aarthi was in an extremely bad mood that day, she was glad that Karthik used to go with his father to assist at his workplace otherwise all her anger would befall upon her poor son. Another reason for Aarthi’s depression was her bad dreams. She was having nightmares of yakshas and other evil beings more and more lately.
Rajesh and Karthik returned from work in the evening, they all had tea happily while chatting about the events of the day. “Father, I was able to handle that client all myself, didn’t I?” Karthik said. “Yes son, one day you’ll take my place and achieve greater things than I ever did, you are really good!”. “OK, let’s have some more tea over this happy news!” said Aarthi and went to kitchen to prepare more tea.
But as she was returning with tea, she noticed that Karthik had already used his tricycle again and left it near the kitchen entrance. “KARTHIK, you fool. How many times did I….” but stopped in between. This time, he didn’t say “sorry mother”. Instead, he directly looked at Aarthi with his sharp and angry eyes, as if irritated or displeased at being scolded. Aarthi felt a jolt of both fear and surprise simultaneously after looking at those eyes. And she understood. She looked outside and it was already sunset, the “other personality” of Karthik had now surfaced.
Aaarthi didn’t know what to do in this weird situation, she didn’t want to bother her husband because he was already in enough work stress, and she was also afraid about how he might react. It wasn’t just about his looks and accent, there were harmonal changes too. “Mother, can I have some water?” asked Karthik during dinner, and as she passed him the glass, he gripped her palms rather tightly and Aarthi felt goosebumps. This touch certainly wasn’t her son’s.
Over the next few days, Aarthi’s emotional state was quite tumultuous with all kinds of emotions running and causing storms across her mind. Firstly, she was irritated and depressed due to this sudden weird behavior of her son, secondly she was also irritated because she couldn’t talk about this to anyone without attracting a lot of undue attention and blame. But there was a third reason for the emotional turmoil too: though Aarthi would never admit it, she had slowly but surely begun to feel a strange kind of attraction to this second personality of Karthik.
