CHAPTER 1: THE FIRST MEETING
It had been 4 days since the waterline to the district had burst. It had been estimated that it would take at least 2 weeks for the water to come back. Luckily Farhan had installed a water tanker in his apartment. Farhan was studying at Goa at University, He was actually from Delhi but moved here into an apartment for his higher studies. His father paid the rent and his college tuition who was a successful businessman. When Farhan told him about the fact that there was gonna be no water in his neighborhood he immediately had a water tank installed for him. This made functioning easier for Farhan.
Farhan was watching a cricket match when he heard “Ding Dong” There was a ring at the door. Farhan opened it up and saw a chubby 45-year-old woman with bun-up hair, it was Shruti. Shruti was his next-door neighbor. She was a single mother who had 2 children. One was 5 years old and the other was 3 years old. Unlike Farhan, she struggled with finances. She worked as a receptionist which paid very poorly. With that small pay, she had to manage her entire home expenses including her children’s school fees and other expenses. She couldn’t afford to have a water tank installed so she had to manage with what little water she had. By day 4 all the water she had saved ran out. The last water had been used in preparing her kids for school.
When Farhan had opened the door she was looking down as if she was embarrassed. Farhan politely asked if there was anything she needed. She responded by asking him “Can I use your restroom ?”. Farhan said “Yes” and then let her in and guided her to his room’s bathroom. After she closed the door Farhan got back to watching the match.
20 minutes later he heard a door open. By this point, Farhan had been so lost in the match that he forgot that Shruti was using his bathroom. So he staggered at first then remembered and went to politely escort Shruti to the door.
While they were walking through the door Shruti was nervously playing with her fingers. Once at the door she finally mustered up the courage to say “Thank you so much, you are very kind. There wasn’t a drop of water at my house and I didn’t know what to do.”
Farhan responded with “It is ok, I understand this water shortage is bothering us all.” He then offered to give her a bucket of water so she can use it for the rest of the day when her kids come back from school. Shruti agreed.
So Farhan filled a bucket and placed it in her home. She thanked Farhan once again and they both entered their respective apartments.
Shruti was relieved by the fact that this entire ordeal went smoothly. Shruti being a woman has to deal with a lot of uncomfortable situations at work. For her, the walk to the bathroom is the worst. From her reception desk to the ladies’ bathroom there is a 2-minute walk however it is the most uncomfortable walk for her. She noticed that every male gaze follows her as she makes her way to the bathroom. Knowing that she is being observed when going to the bathroom makes her feel ashamed and embarrassed and to some degree fearful as one time a male co-worker was waiting for her outside and started making forced conversations when she exited. Since then she has feared for her safety and avoids using the bathroom when outside her house.
However, since there was no water at her house she had to make the difficult choice of asking her next-door neighbor who is a young 20-year-old boy if she can use his bathroom. She was concerned about multiple uncertainties.
Unlike the workplace where there are multiple witnesses to deter any malicious approaches here, she would be at the mercy of her neighbor and would be in a state of absolute vulnerability in his bathroom. She was afraid about what if he tried to watch her from the peephole, what is he tried to touch her inappropriately while leading to her the bathroom, or what if the worse would happen and he tried to enter the bathroom while she was using it. She would be helpless in any situation.
However, none of this happened. This boy let her have her privacy in peace. He did not approach her or do anything inappropriate. Instead, he actually helped her and delivered some water as well. She was glad to know that she can trust her neighbor.
