Avi figured he had only known Sebastian for twenty, maybe thirty minutes, but in that short time the boy had completely turned Avi’s life upside down. He couldn’t believe his ears, but at the same time everything Sebastian told him made him desperate for just one more fact.

The Labyrinth, it seemed, was home not just to the Incubi, but a whole host of other creatures. Most of them, unsurprisingly, were chosen or created by The Order to be as dangerous as possible for the tributes inside the maze. There were many different creatures, as well as dangers that were less tangible in nature, but from Sebastian’s point of view, there were three main factions that were really important.

“The first is the Incubi,” he had said. “You’ve met them. Crafty and fast. There’s also the Orcs. Not exactly crafty, but one of them will clobber three guys if you face it head on. The third is the Andromeda. They’re… a bit different. I’ll explain them later.”

One thing that Sebastian wanted to make extremely clear was that nothing down here was capable of reproducing. He’d heard stories of trans men in the Labyrinth, but he was skeptical that The Order would have picked one.

“So if they can’t reproduce, but they need their faction to continuously grow, what do they do…?”

“They… turn tributes into themselves,” mumbled Avi, not looking Sebastian in the eye.

“Right. Incubi kiss people. Orcs imprison men en masse and toss them into a pit of slime. I think they call it Orcium? Full body immersion for a couple seconds will turn even the scrawniest guy into a massive orc.”

Avi gulped. Did all of the monsters have to be so sexually appealing? Maybe that was the point.

“Here’s the thing about the Andromeda— they’re not supernatural. They’re robots. Androids. Mind-controlled humans inside a big suit of armour, like something out of an old sci-fi show.”

“Dangerous?”

Sebastian nodded. “Avi, I’m telling you this as a friend and a fellow tribute: if you are captured, or about to be captured by the Andromeda, find the fastest way to kill yourself.”

Avi shuddered. “Why?”

“Everyone they capture goes to the Factory. I’ve heard stories. They strap you to an assembly line, bleach you, shave you, bolt a suit of armour into you. Then they brainwash you. If the rumours are true, the Andromeda don’t lose their consciousness, just their freedom. You’ll be along for the ride, but have zero control over your body. Jesus…”

Avi immediately pulled him into a hug. “Hey. It’s okay. They can’t get to you here.”

He nodded. “I know. Thank you.”

Avi put his hand on the boy’s chest, holding him tight, and gently allowing his hand to slide down. Suddenly, his hand recoiled when it reached the purple patch on Sebastian’s stomach. It was ice cold.

“To be honest, just with the information I’ve told you, you probably have a better shot than half of the guys in your Century,” said Sebastian, letting go of the embrace.

“How many Centuries are there?” asked Avi.

“Loads. They send a new one every so often. The next one could be next week, or it could be six months from now.”

“Lots of competition, then.”

“Don’t think of it as a competition, Avi. There isn’t a limit to how many people can escape. It’s more like- nngh- ah-” Sebastian suddenly stopped, clutching his stomach in pain. Avi watched in horror as the purple patch slowly grew, until it was about twice the size. Sebastian broke into a cold sweat.

“Are you okay? Here, lie down,” said Avi, getting the boy back under the covers again. “Do you want me to stay-”

“Please,” said Sebastian. “Please stay.” Avi could see the fear in his eyes, a half-crazed, half-desperate look.

Avi pulled himself underneath the covers, lying next to Sebastian. He stared into his eyes. A lovely shade of light blue. Avi couldn’t bear to think that they would soon be that horrible solid white colour.

Pulling himself closer, Avi held Sebastian tight in his arms. He couldn’t bear to let him go.

“I don’t want to be an incubus,” said Sebastian softly.

Avi shushed him. He brushed his hand through his hair. Without any words, he closed his eyes and gave Sebastian a kiss on the forehead.

The dying man hummed contently. He returned the kiss, this time on Avi’s cheek.

“Is this dangerous?” whispered Avi.

“Not until I turn,” mumbled Sebastian. “Only kisses on the lips work anyways.”

Avi’s hand moved slowly to the boy’s back. His skin was so soft, the first truly soft thing he had felt since arriving in the maze.

Sebastian gently kissed Avi’s chest, his warm hands moving to Avi’s hips. Avi winced in pleasure. Butterflies. He moved his mouth to Sebastian’s neck and began to kiss it softly.

Sebastian moaned gently, grabbing Avi’s hips harder. Avi’s hand gently slid down the boy’s hip, avoiding the cold purple spot, until it came to rest on Sebastian’s already hard cock. Sebastian gently threw his head back, moaning again.

Encouraged, Avi began to stroke Sebastian softly and gently, keeping the focus of his lips on kissing Sebastian’s neck.

“Stop,” said Sebastian suddenly, pushing Avi’s hand away from his crotch.

Avi sat up. “Stop?”

“I have a boyfriend,” he said, his breathing still heavy. “If I’m going to die, let me die as a loyal man.”

“Right. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I didn’t exactly stop you.”

Avi lay back down in the bed, staring at the ceiling. “Do you want me to stay with you for the next couple days? Until the end?”

“It’s too risky for you. I’ll try to kiss you,” replied Sebastian. “I think it’s time for you to go.”

Avi rolled over to face Sebastian. “I don’t want you to be alone.”

“I don’t want to be alone. But I want you to survive. I want you to find Jaden and Lance.”

Avi swallowed. “Do you… Do you really think I can?”

“You have to. Please. At the very least, tell Jaden that I love him more than anything in the world.”

Nodding, Avi stood up. One last time, he tucked the doomed man into bed, giving him one last kiss on the forehead. “Thank you,” said Avi. “Thank you for everything.”

“Of course. Take my bag with you as well. I don’t need it.”

“You don’t want your journal?”

“It’s your journal now. You’re the next person to own it. Please keep it safe.”

Avi packed the journal and half the loaf of bread into the satchel. “I will. I swear to God, Sebastian, I will keep it safe.”

Sebastian smiled. “Thank you. Now go. Good luck out there. Don’t forget: Jaden is a redhead. Lance is Korean and has green dyed hair. You can’t miss them.”

Avi threw the satchel over his shoulder. “I won’t. Goodbye, Sebastian.”

“Goodbye, Avi.”

Avi knew he couldn’t hesitate, or he’d never be able to leave. Calmly, he turned to the doorway and ventured back out into the maze once more.

He kept his pace heavy as he wandered the endless grey corridors. His ankle was feeling much better, maybe it hadn’t been twisted after all. Avi had a sense of purpose now; an objective. Something to do other than stand around and wait for a rescue that wasn’t coming.

As Avi walked, he rummaged through his new bag. There was the journal, which was the heaviest object in the bag, but there was also the one and a half loaves of bread, a small glass bottle containing what Avi assumed was water, some lumpy rock fragments, a steel dagger, and what looked like a pendant. That wasn’t something Avi expected to find down here. He removed it from the bag.

The necklace was crudely fashioned, the cord made from twine rope. Contrasting this was the centerstone, a brilliant but roughly cut red gem, secured to the cord by twine messily wrapped around it. It was opaque but deep crimson in colour.

Avi returned it to the bag. It must have been special to Sebastian. Or maybe intended as a gift for Jaden.

As he turned around a corner on his seemingly aimless search for two men among hundreds, Avi wasn’t quite mentally ready for what he saw at the end of the hall.

About fifty meters from him, standing in the threshold of a doorway, were two hulking green creatures: muscled, naked, and bald. Orcs.

“Shit,” whispered Avi to himself. He quickly ducked back behind the corner, cautiously peering at the monsters that Sebastian had described.

In addition to the two orcs, both of them being armed with a spear and a small round shield, there were two men next to them. Humans. They stood in a line next to the orcs, with metal chains around their wrists and ankles. They must have been captured.

But there were two more figures there. Darker in complexion but with unmistakable white hair. More incubi. What the hell was going on here? As Avi calmed himself, he found himself faintly able to hear their conversation.

“…doesn’t matter. We found them first, fair and square,” said one of the incubi.

“Don’t care. They coming with us,” replied an orc in a dull and grizzly voice.

Avi strained his eyes. He couldn’t make out any features of the two chained prisoners. The chances of them being Jaden and Lance were slim, but perhaps they knew someone who could help Avi find them? He was ready to follow any leads at this point.

Keeping low to the ground, Avi crept towards the doorway in which the six of them were standing. As he approached, he could see it a bit clearer now. It seemed to lead to a small platform overhanging a large pit.

“You know you’re required not to interfere with our recruitment,” said an incubus. “It says so in the treaty.”

The orcs seemed to have no interest in the conversation. “Kangis, check chain,” one said to the other. “We go now.”

Avi ducked around a corner, mere meters from the exchange. The argument was serving as a good distraction, but he was running out of time. He had to rescue these guys.
He frantically dug through his bag. He considered using the dagger, but he figured his odds in such a fight were pretty bad. Then, he remembered the sharp stones. He knew he only had one shot.

One of the boys in captivity, a college-aged blond, was shaking. “P-please don’t hurt me…” he said.

The orc laughed as he picked up the chain to lead them away. “Dumb human. Orcification no hurt- OW!”

Avi had nailed his target. The stone had hit the orc right in the back of the skull. It wouldn’t hurt the creature in any way, but it seemed to have exactly the desired effect.

“YOU HIT ME!” cried the orc, spinning around and eyeing the incubi.

“What the hell are you talking about, you moronic green- AH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!”
In a fit of rage, the orc turned around and picked up the skinny demon. He brought him to the platform and, with one motion, tossed the incubus into the pit. Avi grinned with satisfaction.

The remaining incubus stared at the orcs in shock. “You… you bumbling morons! That was an act of war! You just ended eighty years of peace!”

“Not if you no tell anyone,” replied the orc, deadpan and emotionless. The incubus tried to get away, but the two orcs together seized him as he struggled in vain against their combined strength.

Writhing in their arms, the purple-skinned demon leaned over and kissed one of his captors. The orc laughed hysterically. “Stupid purple man. Your kiss no work on orc. Time to die.”

“No! No!” screamed the incubus, but he was just too small to fight against them. Together, the orcs hauled him to the edge of the platform, and threw him into the pit.

Avi couldn’t tell what exactly was in the pit (and frankly had no desire to find out), but with the two orcs standing on the edge he knew he couldn’t waste any time. Cautiously, he revealed himself to the chained up men, the calmer of the two waving him over frantically.

Avi dashed over. “I need your help,” he whispered. “Quickly, let’s push them off and I can get you out of here!”

The two nodded in agreement. Not like they had anything to lose. Avi grabbed the dagger out of his bag, took a deep breath, and, together with his chained allies, charged around the corner.

Avi was not expecting the orcs to be ready for him, but the orcs probably weren’t expecting a third person to charge them. One of the orcs immediately grabbed Avi, stumbling backwards and falling off the edge with the boy in his arms.

This was it. This was the end, thought Avi. He felt the dagger fly out of his hand, but just as quickly, he felt a human hand grab his. Avi gripped it tightly, and as the hand pulled him up, the orc loosened his grip on him.

“Shit! Fuck!” yelled Avi, moving his free hand to grab onto the man supporting him. He felt himself stop falling, his satchel dangling off of him.

He sighed with relief. But as he looked up, Avi realized the predicament he was in.
Avi was about three meters below the platform. He was holding onto one of the men, but he himself was upside down only supported by the chain around his ankles. Same with the other boy a meter above him. Holding the chain at the top, like a sadistic child playing with monkeys in a barrel, was the remaining orc, grinning at the three of them.

“You think you clever?” he asked smugly.

Glancing down at the pit below him, Avi got a good look at it for the first time. The chamber was enormous, about the size of a football field. Some ten meters below Avi was a pit of grey-brown mud, and to his surprise there were dozens of tributes scattered around the vast hole. Most of them seemed stuck.

Avi looked up at the orc, his muscles straining to hold onto the hand. “Wow. A pit of dirt. That sure is scary.”

The orc laughed. “You no know where you are, do you?” As if on queue, Avi felt a rumbling shake the whole space. In the center of the pit, a mass of enormous blue tentacles burrowed up from underneath the mud. Panic set in as the tendrils began to grab men from across the pit. Some tried to crawl away, but ended up stuck in the muck. In only a matter of seconds, about ten tributes and the orc that Avi had knocked in were grabbed by the tentacles, dragged to the center of the pit, and pulled under the mud.

The colour drained from Avi’s face as he looked up. “Let’s… let’s talk about this,” he said.

  1. The world-building is phenomenal. I feel like I’m reading the plot to a real good RPG, if that makes sense.
