Adeline shifted in her seat uneasily at the back of the class, tapping her eraser against her spiral bound notebook as she glanced between her fingernails and the clock. *two minutes? Come on*. the chip on her left thumbnail snagged her index finger as she tapped, consuming her attention. She fought the urge to chew it mightily, not wanting to ruin her perfect manicure on the very first class of the very first day.
*three minutes?*
The classroom door opened with a metallic *chunk* as a disheveled woman pushed her way inside by the elbow. She flashed an apologetic smile as she shuffled frantically towards her desk, both arms overflowing with paper, binders, and a laptop. With a terrific crash she landed on the teacher’s desk at the front of the room, unloading her cargo and standing carefully to her full height. She brushed a handful of stray red hair from her face and smoothed her flowy black dress with a flourish, adjusting her glasses to focus on the twenty two students in front of her.
“Good morning girls! I’m terribly sorry for my tardiness, the teacher’s lounge is an absolute zoo on the first day of classes.” She shuffled through her papers, and finding a clipboard sat delicately behind her desk.
“I’m so glad to be your teacher this year, and I see a few familiar faces out there, welcome back!” she gave a subtle wink, to which the pigtailed blonde sitting in front of Adeline gave a little wave, giving life to half a dozen jangling bracelets.
“Your seats are all fine where you’ve found them, I’ve lost my assigned seating chart anyway. I won’t need to call roll today, as it looks like every seat is filled, just tell me your name if and when you’re called on so I can begin to learn them.” “With that said, welcome to ANL 205! My name is Miss Pember, and I know you’ve all heard the terrible rumors about the workload, and I’m happy to tell you they’re… true” an audible groan erupted, followed by a few short giggles. Ms. Pember smiled “But don’t worry, I hated this class too when I was a senior, so I’ll do my very best to make it enjoyable. All I ask is that you ladies give me your best effort and avoid that senioritis. We’ll start with a syllabus handout and maybe some introductions for the new folks!”
Ms. Pember turned back to her desk to shuffle through her leaning tower of papers, shuffling wildly. Adeline opened her notebook, surprised she hadn’t begun writing yet. She carefully scribed the date, her name, the course code and “Pember” in delicate cursive on the top line. She busied herself meticulously drawing a bullet point on the second line, and looked up to find Ms. Pember still shuffling madly. Annoyed, adeline scrawled “Disorganized!” beneath Ms. Pember’s name.
“I’m so sorry girls, I think I left those copies right where they printed. I’ll leave the first two pages projected while I run to get them for you” Ms. Pember plugged in her laptop, and flashed a desktop background image of herself stripped bare except for a pair of white heels and an ornate red garter, with a smartly dressed man placing a collar around her neck. She touched the steel circlet at her neck delicately as she opened PDFs of the syllabus and left them on the projector while she fled the room.
Adeline started copying the syllabus word for word, having little better to do. The rest of the girls throughout the room started buzzing with conversation. The same pigtailed blonde in front of Adeline turned to her left and started chatting it up with the ponytailed brunette next to her.
Adeline let the conversation around her fade to white noise as she copied diligently, not particularly optimistic about Ms. Pember’s timely return.

As Adeline finished her last lines, Ms. Pember burst through the classroom door, a stack of blue syllabi in hand. She paced between even rows of desks, counting out handouts to be passed backwards. As the stack reached pigtails, it was clear that Ms. Pember had miscounted.
Pigtails raised a dainty hand “Ms. Pember!” she chirped “we’re short one”
Ms. Pember hurried towards the back row and placed the paper on Adeline’s desk.
“You must be Adeline” Ms. Pember smiled. Adeline nodded too quickly and nervously folded back the wrinkled corner of her syllabus.
“I’m glad to have you with us, Adeline. Sorry about the miscount” She stood and turned to walk away, but paused and turned back, kneeling low and quieting her voice “I hate to do this on the first day, but… would you happen to have a paperclip or two handy? Your skirt is a little long for dress code. Let’s just try to keep it above mid thigh from now on, alright?” Ms. Pember smiled without waiting for a response and resumed the front of the class. Adeline tugged her blonde ponytail over her shoulder nervously and fumbled her sky blue skirt from her knees to the middle of her thighs.
Pigtails swiveled in her seat, as Ms. Pember flipped through slides to the start of her lesson. “Hey!” she whispered “I’m Joy! Don’t worry about Amb- I mean Ms. Pember, she’s totally cool after the first few weeks. You can join me and Malissa’s lab group if you want later!” Pigtails grinned and spun around without waiting for a response. She shifted her hips to spread her fake-tanned cheeks and adjusted her thong over her hips, exposing her overly-ornamented remote vibe. She raked her pigtails forward next to her lacy collar and got a low-five from ponytail, who turned back to wink.
Adeline unconsciously felt her own slim hips with her right hand while she prepared to take meaningful notes.
“Alright, girls, go ahead and take out your textbooks and flip to chapter three. I thought I’d get you all out of the summer funk and start out with an easy anatomy lesson.”
There was an intense, momentary disorder as the class fished books from backpacks. Adeline, book already drawn, turned to the proper page and waited, nibbling her lower lip.
As pigtails leaned to her left to retrieve her book, her plug buzzed softly to the tune of a heartbeat four times. Pigtails reached up to touch her collar with her left hand, opening her phone with her right. Ms. Pember’s sharp glance touched on Pigtails shortly, but she smiled and turned back to her slides as she saw Pigtails’ hand at her neck. The girl grinned, gently pushing out her chest to accent her open bra, and snapped a picture before quickly replacing her phone. Her plug buzzed again shortly after as Ms. Pember began to lecture
*What a prude* Adeline thought, rolling her eyes.
